About the Book

Released 2019

In your church circles, within your family or close friends have they been or are they in the process of being swallowed up in the Messianic Torah Observance movement: Being a believer in Christ and yet being taught that to be a good Christian you most keep the Mosaic Law.

Or have you seen these same believers get tangled up the Hebrew Roots movement teaching the necessity of obeying the Mosaic Law because when they accepted the Jewish Messiah they have become Jewish and thus are to obey the Law of Moses and are to wear the entire Jewish religious garb and the keeping of the Jewish feasts?

Do you know of believers who use the man-made law as their default code of living the Christian life with all the legalism that goes along with it. This being prevalent in many believers in the churches to varying degrees were they have those made-man laws that must be kept, and use them as a limpness test to judge believers as to their spirituality or lack of it.

All three of these teachings miss the mark and the intent of God in the Scriptures. They focus on Laws that cannot be kept, or they focus on other man-made laws [legalism] that are not given by God and they enforce them on other believers. Law keeping in any form is a works religion not solely based on Faith, and Faith alone by His Grace. We as believers are to focus on being Christ-like, not like Moses or someone’s else’s [legalistic] convictions.

In my new book, The Law, Then and Now: What About Grace I deal with the Then aspect with the purposes, functions and limitations of the Law of Moses showing to believers the Law of Moses has been rendered inoperative. It ceased to be the standard of living since the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ as Paul clearly teaches in Romans and Galatians.

We as believers, whether Jewish or Gentile are now to walk in Grace. Being without the Mosaic Law however does not mean that we are lawless! I then deal with the Now aspect, we are to live under the Law of Christ because of the blood of the New Covenant, the blood of Christ. The foundation of the Law of Christ given by Him is love, and the apostles through the ministry of the Holy Spirit have given us 600 plus commands, or building blocks on how He has enabled us today to live and walk in Christ by the Holy Spirit. The outworking of the New Covenant is the Law of Christ that we as believers today are to walk in. I then explain the Law of Christ and show its purposes and functions with no limitations, as we in the body of Christ are now completely in God’s Grace and we have been given the power to live and walk in a Christ-like manner, as we learn to yield to the Holy Spirit. Our motivation today is different in Christ because we walk in Christ because of the spiritual blessings we have in heavenly places provided to us through the finished work of Christ. We do not walk to be blessed we are already blessed through how He had blessed us.

Do you know how to walk in Grace without the burden of the Laws and legalisms that are thrust upon us from well-meaning believers who do not comprehend the Law of Christ, the Law of Messiah? I invite you to come on this wonderful spiritual journey.

Endorsements
“How should modern day believers, Jewish or non-Jewish believers, relate to the Law of Moses? This is the question John Metzger attempts to answer in this well-written and interesting book. Solidly based in Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, he attempts to show us how and we can “fulfill the Law of Messiah” (Galatians 6:2). This book nicely fills a lacuna in the literature on this specific question. I like Metzger’s practical answers, and I suspect you will too.”

"In a Messianic world that is becoming increasingly inundated with the false message of the Hebrew Roots Movement and efforts to entrap people in the concept that we (Jewish and Gentile believers) are obligated to live under some aspect of the post-Yavneh Rabbinic milieu, it is refreshing to know that there is a voice of reason out there. John Metzger’s examination of the conditional Mosaic Covenant and the UNCONDITIONAL New Covenant of Jesus is such a voice of reason."

"For all who struggle to know how, or if, the Law of Moses fits into living the Christian life, this book is written for you. For all those asking - “If the Law of Moses is not the standard and guide for how believers should live today, what is?” - this book is especially written for you.

While explaining the purposes and the provisions of both the Law of Moses and the Law of Messiah, this book gives a clear and biblical and free grace understanding that believers are under the Law of Messiah today. John Metzger carefully explains how the Law of Messiah (basically the divinely inspired apostolic teaching recorded in the New Testament) gives believers guiding principles and specific instructions for victorious Christian living. Instruction is combined with practical application to help you as you seek to live the victorious Christian life. It is refreshing to read a book written about this topic that is thoroughly grounded not only in truth, but also in grace.

Many believers are far from the abundant life Christ talked about and wants all who believe on Him to experience, for many live shallow Christian lives filled with despair and discouragement. This book describes the liberating and empowering work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer who seeks to walk in the truths contained in the Law of Messiah. I highly recommend this book to those who desire to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ."

"For over 30 years it’s been my privilege to be part of the Messianic Jewish movement of believers in Messiah Jesus, with 17 of those years spent in leadership of a Messianic congregation in a heavily Jewish suburb of New York City. While our congregation was very Jewish in its culture, we also fully embraced Grace. At the same time it was easy to see that in many corners of the Messianic movement there was confusion over a central question: Are believers in Messiah obligated to keep Mosaic Law?
This book is entitled “The Law, Then and Now: What About Grace”. In my circles of Grace embracing Jewish believers in Messiah Jesus, I have heard much discussion over whether the Law of Messiah is something that can be enumerated and written out, or if it is simply a phrase that reflects a heart that is yielded to the Lord, a heart of flesh on which God has written His law. However, about the Law of Moses there should be no such question, for the Scripture that instructs New Covenant believers tells us with complete certainty that we are no longer under Mosaic Law, but are under Grace. So, why is there still confusion? In most cases the cause for uncertainty is unwillingness or failing to see the context in which Scripture is given. That is where John Metzger’s book will be so helpful to sincere Bible students. His treatment of the Law of Moses is masterful; I highly recommend it as a guidebook to fully embracing the freedom for which Messiah has set us free."

"I’ve been following my friend John Metzger’s ministry for many years. He is a premier Bible teacher whose thinking is firmly grounded in the Scriptures. In particular, I appreciate his unique way of analyzing complex topics and making them easy to understand. In this important book, that’s what he has done with the controversial topic of Torah observance or Law-keeping. He masterfully and patiently explains that there are two Torah’s (i.e., two sets of “Laws” or “Instructions”) in the Bible. These two laws are complementary rather than contradictory; but one of them has been broken and is therefore no longer in force as binding law while the other one remains fully applicable to all believers, whether Jewish or non-Jewish. The lists throughout the book and the extensive appendices near the end are especially useful. Believers in Yeshua (Jesus) from all denominational and non-denominational backgrounds will greatly benefit from reading this illuminating book."
